Vineyards
Molino di Sant’Antimo is located to the south-east of Montalcino, close to the famous Sant’Antimo Abbey and more precisely on the slop that goes from Castelnuovo dell’Abate towards the most tormented and wild territory of Montalcino, in direction to the Monte Amiata.
‘ The Azienda ‘ comprises 40 hectares, 11 with vineyards, extending from 300 to 250 meters a.s.l. , to the Orcia river, the last border of Brunello. The vineyards are surrounded by shady corner of beautiful woodland, ravine and calanchi.
MICROCLIMATE
The Orcia valley here narrows between this ridge and the imposing one of Monte Amiata which, with its 1740 meters height, has a decisive influence on the microclimate of this area, limiting the intense rainy phenomena and favoring the important temperature range between the day and the night.
Il maestrale goes up from the nearby coast reaching up here to regulate humidity and mitigate the summer heat.
THE SOIL
Soils are originated in the ‘ Pleistocene’ during which the repression of the sea begins, which 50 millions years ago submerge these places with the consequent development of multiple sedimentary and erosive processes.
Here the soils are rich in fine-textured deposit, limestone rocks, clay, marl and crushed stone, very rich in mineral salt.
The vineyards, divided into 12 small plots, are exposed at the top to the south-east, then to the north-east and finally to the south-west. Descending more and more, towards to the Orcia river, the slopes increase and the vineyards shrink into tiny patches of earth even richer in skeleton and river stones.
The vineyards, planted gradually over the years ( 1991-2001 ), now amount to 11 hectares of Sangiovese Grosso for the production of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
